Misty Garden

Original acrylic painting on hardboard

Available for purchase

Misty Garden is loosely inspired by a hilltop garden in Elgin, built from scratch by a truly remarkable woman, mother to one of my close friends — while raising four boisterous boys, she still carved out a space that was entirely her own.

For me, the garden represents more than refuge. It speaks to the quiet strength of making something for yourself within a life that is otherwise full, noisy, and demanding. I imagine early mornings before the day begins — cool air, soft light — wandering the paths she created, gathering a few sprigs, drawing strength from what she built.

The painting holds that sense of calm and presence. It is not about drama or display, but about steadiness. About choosing attention, care, and beauty as acts of self-definition rather than indulgence.

Misty Garden is a painting about stillness, strength, and the quiet power of creating something that is wholly your own.

A note from the studio

For the gardeners: While it’s never my intention to produce botanical studies, I like to anchor for recognition in my work. The orange and purple flowers in the foreground of Misty Garden are, respectively, Wild Dagga (Leonotis) and Blue Sage / Bloublomsalie (Salvia africana-caerulea).

And for those interested in process: To bring certain areas forward, I worked with colour, detail, and size — where these increase, the garden comes closer. To push the tree line back, I used a soft wash of colour taken from the sky. The result is a painting that can be read in layers, depending on how closely you look.
