LP 001 The Voorkamer
The Voorkamer is an original acrylic painting from my Limited Palette Series—a growing collection of small, individually numbered artworks created using black, white and just a handful of carefully chosen colours.
This was the very first painting in my Limited Palette Series and, in many ways, the one that convinced me the challenge was worth pursuing. Created using just four colours—my favourite Pepto-Bismol pink, yellow ochre, black and white—I was delighted by the richness and subtlety that emerged from such a restrained palette. I'm particularly fond of the luscious coral papaya, a colour that one visitor from the printing industry told me is notoriously difficult to reproduce.
As the painting developed, it began to remind me of the muted still lifes that hung in so many South African homes during the 1950s and 60s. Fruit bowls, hydrangeas and polished furniture painted in gentle, sun-softened colours that somehow felt both elegant and familiar. The palette is unmistakably mid-century, but with a distinctly South African warmth.
The title, The Voorkamer, is a deliberate blend of English and Afrikaans. While voorkamer literally translates as "front room", the Afrikaans word carries a cultural meaning that the English never quite captures. It wasn't simply the room at the front of the house. It was the room reserved for visitors and special occasions—the one with the "good" furniture, family photographs, carefully chosen paintings and flowers cut fresh from the garden.
Hydrangeas, often known in South Africa as Christmas Roses, bloom in December and thrive in Kleinmond's climate. Every Christmas they transport me back to childhood visits to elderly relatives, when my father would bundle us children into the car to call on elderley relatives while my mother prepared the Christmas lunch. Those voorkamers seemed to hold a particular kind of stillness—cool in the summer heat, filled with conversation, memories and paintings that quietly became part of how I understood home.
For me, The Voorkamer is a celebration of those rooms, those summers and the understated beauty of an ordinary South African life.
Like every work in the Limited Palette Series, this painting forms part of an ongoing visual diary—small observations, moments of curiosity and quiet discoveries that emerge through the process of painting.
