LP 003 Hygge

Hygge is an original acrylic painting from my Limited Palette Series—a growing collection of small, individually numbered artworks created using black, white and just a handful of carefully chosen colours.

I love how this winter table of pears and saucer magnolia buds quietly took on a Nordic feel—a sense of hygge. There is comfort in the arrangement of simple, everyday objects and in taking the time to appreciate them.

There's a scent to it too: a luxury bar of imported soap wrapped in tissue paper, the kind long-gone department stores like Garlicks and Stuttafords would bring in at Christmas.

As a teenager, I looked forward to the annual ritual of choosing a small boxed collection of scented soaps for my mother. She would unwrap them with an appreciative smile before putting them aside for "best". They were her little luxury—not to be shared with a husband devoted to Lifebuoy soap or five children who would have happily used them all in a week.

Like every work in the Limited Palette Series, this painting forms part of an ongoing visual diary—small observations, moments of curiosity and quiet discoveries that emerge through the process of painting.
