Sheltered – Original Mixed Media Landscape
Sheltered is an original mixed media landscape by Mary-Anne Flanagan, inspired by winter mornings near Swellendam in the Western Cape.
Set beneath the protective presence of the Langeberg Mountains, a row of farm cottages rests in the cool shadow of the hills. The painting draws on memories of winter holidays: woodsmoke lingering in the air, steaming mugs of tea, warm jerseys and scarves, and the slow arrival of sunlight across the landscape.
Layers of paint, charcoal and expressive oil pastel mark-making celebrate both memory and materiality. The drawn line across the hillside is a deliberate reminder that this is not a photograph, but a remembered place shaped by feeling, texture and time.
