Wag-’n-Bietjie | Original Acrylic Karoo Landscape Painting

$195.35

“Wag-’n-bietjie”—wait a little—is the common name for the acacia, known for its long, white thorns that catch and slow you down as you pass. It’s a practical name, born from experience. But like many idioms, something is lost in translation. For me, it carries more than instruction. It leans closer to an invitation: stay a while.

This painting reflects that tension—the thorn as both barrier and welcome. In the foreground, the branches reach out, sharp and insistent, interrupting the easy passage of the eye. They catch, much like the plant itself does in the veld. But beyond them, the landscape opens: a quiet dam, low Karoo hills, and a lone windpump standing steady in the distance.

The Karoo has this same duality. At first glance, it can feel harsh—dry, exposed, unyielding. But spend time there and something shifts. The pace softens. Attention deepens. What seemed spare begins to reveal its rhythm, its warmth, its generosity.

The palette reflects this experience rather than the literal scene. Pink earth, sun-warmed grasses, and a softened sky speak to how the landscape is held in memory—less about accuracy, more about feeling. The windpump anchors the work, a familiar presence in South African rural life, quietly sustaining what surrounds it.

In this way, the thorn and the land mirror one another. What catches you also holds you. What slows you down is what allows you to see.
